University of Kent Hosts 1,500 Quakers
August 2011
The University of Kent in Canterbury has just hosted its largest event of the year last week with 1,500 Quakers gathering for their Yearly Meeting at the University
from 30 July to 6 August.
Having held a successful Yearly Meeting at the University in 2000, the Quakers have been delighted to return this year.
Sheena Butterworth, Executive Conference Officer at the University commented:
‘The Quakers find the University of Kent to be the ideal location for their Yearly Meeting. Our spacious 450 acre campus is ideal - they arranged for a special big top in Rutherford car park for their main worship sessions and several additional marquees were provided for the social programme. We have some 270 young people who attend with their families and they find our self-catering accommodation at Park Wood Village ideal as their base for the week. It is fantastic that we have attracted this major event to Kent for the second time.'
The theme of this year's Meeting was:
‘Growing in the Spirit: changing the way we live to sustain the world we live in'.
Jon Cruddas MP addressed the Meeting on 2 August when he delivered the Salter Lecture.
