Eco-Friendly New Build in the Cotswolds

Eco-Friendly New Build in the Cotswolds
August 2011

Gloucestershire's Lord Lieutenant, Dame Janet Trotter, has officially opened the Sir Emrys Jones Centre at the Royal Agricultural College (RAC) in Cirencester.

This major new teaching facility has enhanced the offer to business clients with provision of 6 meeting rooms of various sizes, all based around a central, natural light atrium. Rooms will be fully equipped with the latest av equipment and wifi connections and provide flexibility for exhibition space, reception and registration areas, interview rooms and break out spaces. There is also a new sports hall currently incorporating the gym.

Sustainability was a priority in the design of the building, which incorporates rainwater harvesting, low energy lighting, with movement and daylight sensors, and a natural ventilation system. A new biomass boiler heats the Centre, along with the library, café and sports hall, aiming to cut the RAC's carbon footprint, reducing carbon emissions by 100 tonnes of CO2 each year.

The £1.4m building is part of £3.5m of development taking place around the campus, making it the largest capital development project undertaken in the College's history. Current refurbishment of the Woodlands accommodation block will create an additional 57 en suite bedrooms by October 2012 to provide further opportunities for residential conferencing at the RAC.
